Cape Vultures
By Marc Alexander from his ‘In The Balance‘ series. Cape Vultures, oil and gold leaf on canvas, 120cm by 90cm, (2016).
Cape Vultures
These vultures are found mainly in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and in some parts of northern Namibia. They nest on cliffs and lays one egg per year. The species is listed by the IUCN as “Vulnerable”, the major problems it faces being poisoning, disturbance at breeding colonies and powerline electrocution. The current population is estimated at 8,000. Being a South African, I have often encountered these birds in our beautiful game reserves.
